The UEMS PRM Board, as part of the PRM Section, once again proudly sponsored trainee doctors specialising in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) to attend the Euro-Mediterranean Rehabilitation Summer School, held from 16–19 October 2025 at the Sant’Angela Merici Foundation in Syracuse, Italy.

Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence

This year’s edition marked a special milestone — the 20th anniversary of the Summer School since its founding in 2005. To celebrate, the theme for 2025 was “Yesterday – Today – Tomorrow”, reflecting on how PRM has evolved and where it is heading.

The school is coordinated by Prof. Franco Cirillo and is supported by several leading organisations in the field, including SIMFER (Italian PRM Society), the European Society of PRM (ESPRM), and the Mediterranean Forum of PRM (MFPRM).

A Rich Programme for Future PRM Specialists

The opening day featured participant introductions along with presentations on the history of the school and the pivotal roles of SIMFER, ESPRM, and the UEMS PRM Board in specialist training and education.

Throughout the week, participants attended high-level lectures and discussions on a wide range of cutting-edge topics, including:

  • International Classification of Functioning (ICF)
  • Cochrane Rehabilitation
  • Research in PRM
  • Orthotics and prosthetics
  • Physical therapy
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound
  • Functional MRI
  • Robotics and virtual reality
  • Artificial intelligence and telerehabilitation

Building Networks and Experiences

As always, the Summer School also offered excellent opportunities for networking through its well-organised social evening. The overall logistics and structure of the programme contributed to a smooth and enriching experience for all involved.

Looking Ahead

Participant feedback will be vital in continuing to enhance the quality and impact of the Summer School. With each edition, this initiative remains a cornerstone of PRM education across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
